Watch out for one common misconception: unlike the summers before 2025, you can no longer just buy your ticket casually on board. Online booking with payment is now the rule, on the Drei Zinnen region website or the südtirolmobil app. Buying on board or at Dobbiaco station is only possible if seats remain, and at a higher fare. Even südtirolmobil pass holders have to reserve a time slot, and the tourist Mobilcard is not valid on this line.

Getting to Dobbiaco by train

Dobbiaco (Toblach in German) sits on the Val Pusteria railway line. Regional trains leave from Fortezza/Franzensfeste, on the Brenner axis, roughly every 30 minutes, and reach Dobbiaco in 1h10 to 1h15. From Bolzano, allow around 2h25 with the change at Fortezza, for about 22 to 25 EUR ($24-27) — check the exact fare on trenitalia.com.

The detail that makes the trip seamless: Dobbiaco train station is itself a 444 bus stop. You step off the train and onto the bus, without crossing the town.

From Verona or Innsbruck, change at Fortezza. From Venice, the logical route runs up the other side: a regional train to Calalzo di Cadore (about 2h45), then Dolomiti Bus line 30 to Cortina d'Ampezzo. Trenitalia and Dolomiti Bus even sell a combined train + bus ticket on this axis.

Plan B: via Cortina and Misurina

The second gateway, on the Veneto side, is Cortina d'Ampezzo. Dolomiti Bus lines 30 and 31 connect Cortina to Misurina. From there, a dedicated shuttle climbs from the village of Misurina up to Rifugio Auronzo via Lake Antorno, daily from 30 May, roughly 7:40 am to 7:15 pm.

Its big advantage: 10 EUR (about $11) per person, valid for the day, and no booking required. You buy the ticket on the Dolomitibus app, contactless on board, or from the machine in Misurina (details on the official site). In summer, line 51 runs the direct link from Cortina and line 50 from Auronzo di Cadore; at the very start and very end of the season, you have to go through Misurina.

One connection trap to know: the 444 bus does not serve the village of Misurina. It stops at "Bivio Misurina", the road junction above the lake. If your plan combines the two networks, factor in that short gap.

And by car? 40 EUR and a plate to register the day before

The comparison is worth making, because it explains why the bus took off. Since 2025, the toll road climbing from Lake Antorno to Rifugio Auronzo is only accessible by online booking: you register your licence plate before 11:59 pm the day before on the Auronzo portal, and a plate-recognition barrier filters access. The car fare has risen from 30 to 40 EUR (26 EUR for a motorbike, 60 EUR for a camper van), parking included for 12 hours.

The old "leave early to beat the closing" reflex is now useless: without a booked slot, you don't go up, whatever the hour. Spaces sell out days ahead in high season. Where the bus can be booked the day before, the car may require planning further ahead — to pay more in the end.

Once up there: the trail 101 loop

The bus drops you at Rifugio Auronzo, 2,320 m (7,610 ft), right on the trail. The classic Tre Cime loop (trail 101) runs about 10 km (6 mi) for 4 hours of walking: Rifugio Lavaredo, Forcella Lavaredo and its head-on view of the north faces, Rifugio Locatelli (2,405 m / 7,890 ft), then back via the Langalm pastures. It is waymarked, wide and free of technical difficulty in dry weather.

With the first bus arriving around 8:35 am and the last return at 6:14 pm, the day comfortably absorbs the full loop, a refuge break included. If you only want an out-and-back to the Forcella Lavaredo viewpoint, 2h30 is enough.

The 2026 season traps

• Assuming you can hop on the bus on a whim. Online booking is mandatory all season, via the südtirolmobil app or the Drei Zinnen site. On board it is "subject to availability" and more expensive.
• Counting on the Mobilcard. The tourist card is not accepted on the 444, and even a valid südtirolmobil pass does not exempt you from booking a slot.
• Aiming for Misurina with the 444. The stop is called Bivio Misurina: it is the junction, not the lakeside village.
• Missing the last return. 6:14 pm at Rifugio Auronzo. The refuges post the time, but check the 2026 version of the PDF on suedtirolmobil.info before you set off.
• Underestimating the crowds. Summer 2026 is the first after the Milan-Cortina Games: the region expects big numbers. Book bus or toll road early, and leave on the first departures.
