How to choose a destination

Fifty-one countries is too many to browse at random. Three criteria narrow the list to two or three serious candidates: the season, what it actually costs on the ground, and how much time you have.

Start with the season, not the wish

A beautiful destination at the wrong time is still a bad trip: monsoon in Southeast Asia, Gulf heat in summer, Norwegian fjords without daylight in December. Every country page carries a month-by-month climate table — apply that filter first.

The airfare tells you nothing about the cost of the trip

A cheap flight to Iceland or Switzerland is undone by three days of spending on arrival, while a long haul to Vietnam or Uzbekistan pays for itself. Our guides break down a daily budget by category — lodging, food, transport — rather than one abstract total.

Match the ambition to the time you have

A week is enough for one city and its surroundings, or an island. Three weeks is the minimum for a country the size of Japan or Peru, where internal travel easily eats a third of your days. Below that, shrink the area rather than rush it.
