Leaving from Milan and want to reach Bellagio without a car? The fastest way is the train. Take a Trenord train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino (~1h05, €7.40 / about $8 in 2nd class), then the Varenna → Bellagio ferry (~15 min). Allow 1h25 to 1h30 in total. From Como it's a different story: you can choose between the boat and the bus. We break down each option below, with the real prices and the traps to avoid.

From Milan: train + ferry via Varenna, the smart route

The shortest Milan → Bellagio route runs through Varenna, not Como. The Trenord RE8 train links Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino in ~1h05, with no change, for €7.40 (about $8) in 2nd class. From there, a short ferry drops you at Bellagio. Simple and efficient.

Watch one detail: the operator is Trenord, not Trenitalia. Look for the RE8 RegioExpress line (Milano-Lecco-Sondrio-Tirano). There's roughly one train per hour, so around fifteen departures a day. Make sure you get off at the "Varenna-Esino" stop, then follow the signs to the boat pier, a few minutes' walk from the station.

At Varenna you have two ways to cross: the car-ferry (which also takes foot passengers) or a scheduled boat. The Varenna → Bellagio crossing takes ~15 min and costs about €5 (roughly $5.50) for a foot passenger. Check the day's timetable on Navigazione Laghi before you set off, especially late in the day.

From Como: slow boat, hydrofoil or bus?

From Como, you have three ways to reach Bellagio without a car: the slow boat, the fast boat and the bus. The ordinary boat costs €12.00 (about $13) and takes ~2h according to Navigazione Laghi. The C130 bus takes about 1h05 to 1h15. Here's how to choose.

The boat: slow battello or servizio rapido

The battello is the slow boat. It calls at every pier along the shore, which makes it a scenic but lengthy ride: ~2h for €12.00 (about $13) one way at full fare. Perfect if you have time and want to soak up the scenery from the deck.

To go faster, take the servizio rapido (hydrofoil or catamaran). It makes fewer stops and drops to 45 min - 1h. The surcharge is +€5.00, bringing the total to about €17.00 (around $18). One crucial point: this surcharge cannot be bought on board. Buy it before you get on, at the ticket office or online.

Planning several crossings in one day? The day pass for free movement on section 6 (which covers Como-Bellagio) works out at €27.00 (about $29) per adult. It quickly pays off once you string together two or three hops between the villages of the central lake.

The C130 bus (formerly C30) by road

The bus is the overland option. The C130 line run by ASF Autolinee (renamed on 11 July 2025, formerly C30) links Como to Bellagio along the eastern shore road. Allow 1h05 to 1h15 on a winding but pretty road. Service runs roughly once an hour.

On price, it's a standard ASF intercity bus ticket: just a few euros. On public holidays the bus runs less often, sometimes only every two hours. Check the current timetable and fares directly on asfautolinee.it before you travel, as they vary by season.

Car-ferry or foot-passenger boat: don't pick the wrong pier in Bellagio

In Bellagio there are two separate piers, about ~5 min apart on foot. Getting the wrong one can make you miss a departure. According to the Bellagio tourist office, each serves different destinations. Spot the right one before you arrive.

  • Pontile passeggeri (Imbarcadero), Piazza Mazzini: this is the foot-passenger boat pier. It serves the whole shore down to Como. This is where you board the battello or the servizio rapido towards Como.
  • Pontile autotraghetto (car-ferry): it links Bellagio to Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia, the famous "centro lago" (central lake). This is the pier used by the car-and-passenger ferry.

Key point if you're coming from Varenna: the car-ferry (traghetto) serves only the central lake. It does not run as far as Como. If your final destination is the town of Como, you want the scheduled boat from the pontile passeggeri, not the traghetto.

And if you're travelling with a car (on another day), the Navigazione Laghi car-ferry fare for a vehicle up to 3.50 m is €4.60 (about $5) for the vehicle alone, or €10.10 (about $11) with the driver. But as a foot passenger, stick with the roughly €5 crossing.

Seasonal timetables: watch out in winter

Timetables change sharply with the season, and winter has surprises in store. From 3 November 2025 to 22 March 2026, Navigazione Laghi runs the "invernale" winter timetable: reduced service, fewer sailings, and the servizio rapido heavily cut back, sometimes suspended altogether. Always check before you leave.

In summer and high season (roughly June to September) it's the opposite: the service runs at full tilt, with the maximum number of sailings and every type of boat. The C130 bus also follows two separate timetables, summer and winter. Never rely on a schedule you saw last year.

Our practical tip: if you're travelling off-season, go for the train + ferry via Varenna. That combination stays reliable all year round, whereas the fast links from Como can be suspended. The Varenna → Bellagio ferry runs with good regularity, even when the hydrofoils stop.

Recap: which route to choose by your starting point

No time to read it all again? Here's the essential. The best choice mostly comes down to where you start and how much time you have. The train + ferry from Milan stays the fastest at ~1h25-1h30, while from Como the bus and the boat are evenly matched depending on your priorities.

  • From Milan: Trenord RE8 train to Varenna-Esino (~1h05, €7.40 / about $8) + ferry to Bellagio (~15 min, about €5). Total: ~1h25-1h30. The fastest and most reliable.
  • From Como, for the scenery: the slow battello, €12.00 (about $13), ~2h, calling at every stop on the lake.
  • From Como, for speed on the water: the servizio rapido, about €17.00 (around $18), 45 min to 1h. Buy the surcharge before you board.
  • From Como, by road: the C130 bus, ~1h05-1h15, a few euros. Handy when the fast boats aren't running.
  • Several crossings in one day: the section 6 day pass for free movement, €27.00 (about $29).

One last reflex before you go: check the day's timetable and the season on navigazionelaghi.it, and pin down the right pier in Bellagio in advance. With those two precautions, reaching the pearl of Lake Como without a car becomes simple, even in the dead of winter.
